タンニャパリットは、黄金町地域に特有な要素として「電車」に注目した。人々の活動範囲、物流、生活のリズム、都市景観を劇的に変えた近代の産物でありながら、今では当たり前のものとして日常に溶け込む電車という存在。人々は、そのような存在について、アニミズムや幽霊といった近代以前の土着信仰を持ちながら、どのように受け入れているのだろうか。この問いに立脚しながら、彼は様々な電車の音を録音した。収集した音から連想する「現代のモンスター」を描くワークショップを会期前に開催。そこで集めた参加者のドローイングをもとに、作家は「現代のモンスター」を描いた提灯の作品を制作した。日本ではお祭りの装飾としても、おばけとしても馴染みのある提灯は、土着信仰の象徴と言えるかもしれない。そんな提灯は、聖/俗の境界を示すが中身が空洞であるしめ縄とともに高架下に吊るされた。モンスターのうめき声のような音と電車の実際の音が混ざりあったかいだん広場は、現実と想像の狭間にいる「現代のモンスター」を介して、外来のものを受容しながら独特な霊性を作り上げた現代の日本社会に目を向けさせた。
Tanyapalit focused on the "trains" as a peculiarity of the Koganecho area. Once a modern product that dramatically changed people's activities, logistics, daily rhythms, and cityscape, it is now a matter that is taken for granted in everyday life. How do people respond to this, while holding traditional beliefs such as animism and ghosts? Building on this question, Tanyapalit recorded various train sounds. He then held a workshop before the exhibition for participants to draw "modern monsters" in association with the sounds. Based on these drawings, he then created paper lanterns depicting the "modern monsters". Lanterns, which are seen in Japan as festival decorations and also as spooks, could be said to be a symbol of traditional beliefs. The lanterns were hung beneath the railway along with a shimenawa [rope used for ritual purification in Shinto], which while hollow, symbolize the boundary between this world and the spirit world. Through the sounds of the monster's moans mingled with the actual sound of trains in Step Plaza, the "modern monsters" existing between reality and imagination, our eyes turn to modern Japanese society which has created a unique spirituality while accepting the foreign.

タイ、チェンマイを拠点にするアヌラック・タンニャパリットは、身体、建築、歴史、信仰といった様々な視点から都市に対してアプローチするアーティストです。
黄金町バザール2019では、近代都市の中で生きる人々が電車の存在と土着的な信仰をどのように共存させているのかという点に注目し、作品制作を行います。
今回開催するワークショップでは、電車の走行音から、参加者が「近代都市のモンスター」を想像し、絵を描きます。そこでつくられたモンスターは、黄金町バザール2019の会期中、アヌラックが採集した音とともに、かいだん広場周辺で展示される予定です。
Listen to the sounds of the train and create your own monster!
Anurak Tanyapalit, based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is an artist who approaches the city from various perspectives such as body, architecture, history, and religion.
At Koganecho Bazaar 2019, we will focus on how people living in modern cities coexist with the existence of trains and their indigenous religions.
At the workshop to be held this time, participants will draw pictures by imagining "monsters in modern cities" based on the running sounds of trains. The monsters created there will be displayed around Kaidan Square with the sounds collected by Anurak during the Koganecho Bazaar 2019.
